Doechii Shares Stage With Ms. Lauryn Hill – Drops ‘Anxiety’
Grammy award-winning artist Doechii is trending throughout social media upon the official release of her song ‘Anixety’ to all major streamers. This is four years after introducing fans to the track in a “Coven Music Session” on YouTube. This particular song samples Gotye’s smash hit “Somebody That I Used To Know”, placing an edgy twist to the song with her lyrics. “Solo, no mojo / I bounce back, no pogo / Unhappy, no homo / New brands, no logos / Money on my juggla, natural hustler / Think I need a smuggler up in Russia,” she raps over the acoustic guitar and xylophone-laden instrumental.”
“I’m going to break down this lore to people who don’t understand it,” Doechii said ahead of the song’s official release. She explained that Sleepy Hallow, whom she called an “amazing artist,” dropped a track with the same title that samples her song. The record, which appears on his Boy Meets World, eventually ended up taking off online, followed by people searching for the original.
“He was sampling my song called ‘Anxiety,’ but my song is using the sample of ‘Somebody That I Used To Know,’” the rapper shared via her Instagram Story. “I took that beat, and I made my own song on top of it. I dropped that song on YouTube. It never hit streaming, and then Sleepy Hallow sampled that, it got approved, and then that song blew up, and now people are finding the original version on TikTok.”
Since reintroducing listeners to the track with a teaser late February, the song gained major traction on TikTok. Fans created nearly 100,000 videos featuring the song in their content, reigniting interest globally. Many influencers have reshared the track, helping to garner more traffic on YouTube, which sits at 6.4 million views.
Lauryn Hill Gives Doechii Stamp Of Approval
Outside of this song gaining attention, Doechii has made headlines this weekend after sharing the stage alongside Ms. Lauryn Hill at the Jazz In The Garden Festival on Saturday evening, March 8th in Miami. Ms. Lauryn Hill was booked as the headliner of night one of the event. Hill brought her out to perform the second verse to her classic song Doo Wop (That Thing), unequivocally approving Doechii’s artistry; passing the torch.
The relevancy of this moment is that both Hill and Doechii are the only women outside of Cardi B to win Best Rap Album at the Grammys. Lauryn Hill was the first female to be given the prestigious honor for her chart-topping album ‘Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill’. Doechii won the Grammy in February for her mixtape ‘Alligators Bites Never Heal’. Users online discussed the significant impact of this moment, as it’s very rare for Ms. Lauryn Hill to outwardly stamp her approval on a new artist.
