Man Detained In PA In Connection With Brian Thompson Killing
A man in the Altoona, Pennsylvania, area is being questioned in connection with the killing of the UnitedHealthcare CEO in Manhattan last week, partly because he had a gun similar to the one used in the shooting, sources told NBC News.
Sources indicate it’s too early to link his case to Brian Thompson’s death, but it’s being investigated as a significant development. NYPD detectives are going to question the individual and assist with the investigation.
Suspect Identified
Customers at a local McDonald’s called the police, thinking he looked suspicious. Officers noticed a fake ID upon arrival and took him in for questioning. Upon arrival at the police station, sources reported that officers found the man in possession of a gun that resembled the one used in Thompson’s killing. They also discovered a silencer and a fake New Jersey ID. The suspected gunman is believed to allegedly have used this fake ID when he checked into a Manhattan hostel last month. According to TMZ the person of interest has now been identified as Luigi Mangione. Police reportedly believe he may have ridden a bus to depart New York after the crime. According to a senior official, they’re investigating if he got off the bus in Philadelphia.
While The New York Times reports he allegedly “had a written “manifesto” in his possession. Law enforcement sources have informed TMZ that the manifesto contains significant criticism of the healthcare industry. To note, although detained, he has not yet been charged with the crime.
A private funeral for Thompson, the 50-year-old executive shot at point-blank range while on his way to an investors’ conference, is set for Monday.
