TikTok Ban In The US moving forward:
Sad news for TikTok users and influencers in the United States as it was revealed this week that plans to ban the app from the US are moving forward. This is unless the Chinese video platform owners follow the US government’s demands to sell their stake in the app. According to CBS, three judges in the federal appeals court for the D.C. Circuit collectively agreed with the Justice Department to ban the social app despite significant protest efforts from citizens and a petition questioning if banning the app was constitutional. The judges unanimously declined to review the relief petition for TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance. Agreeing the ban is constitutional, “We conclude the portions of the Act the petitioners have standing to challenge, that is, provisions concerning TikTok and its related entities, survive constitutional scrutiny, we therefore deny the petition,” Senior Judge Douglas Ginsburg wrote CBS claims.
In April, Congress approved a foreign assistance package that gave grace to TikTok’s owners. The package granted the company nine months to end its business partnership with ByteDance or lose access to the app store and web hosting. U.S. President Joe Biden signed this bill immediately. Time is ticking for TikTok, as the bill is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 19. The president reportedly agreed to grant a one-time 90-day delay if a deal is made by the deadline.
Content Creators Fear Losing Income
One can only imagine the adverse ripple effect this will have financially on the company, as roughly 170 million U.S. users use the app daily. Removing that number of accounts simultaneously could affect the company’s brand sponsorships and partnerships. Also, let’s not forget the slew of social media influencers that will face a negative financial impact in their wallets, as many have made a living being compensated by the app and partners to post video content. This could be detrimental, especially in the US economy, which is already in a recession.
TikTok A Threat To US Security?
However, the greater priority of the US government is protecting citizens’ privacy and personal data. Lawmakers and national security officials were warned that the Chinese government may have been using the app to spy and collect Americans’ data. Further concerns grew as US lawmakers highlighted that the Chinese national security laws reportedly require organizations to engage in intelligence gathering. These actions could potentially cause a threat to national security.
