Wisconsin Man Faces Life In Prison:
A Wisconsin man was found guilty of murder after allegedly fatally shooting a store cashier because he was unhappy with his pizza. Law and Crime reports that 39-year-old Charles J. Leggett became enraged when he saw a worker make his pizza without gloves.
A fellow employee claims the victim, 26-year-old Jamil I. Owies, informed them of a pizza order while they were stocking the cooler. A few moments later, the employee alleges that Leggett walked to the back of the store, where he was cooking, but various items blocked his view, preventing Leggett from being clearly seen.
When Leggett returned to the front counter to speak with Owies, the two began raising their voices and arguing for about a minute. Shortly after, the employee heard a gunshot, followed by the sound of the store’s door opening and closing. Rushing to the front, he discovered Owies lying on the floor, struggling to breathe, according to details in the probable cause affidavit.
Police Responded:
Police were called and arrived at the Action Food and Liquor store around noon on October 19th, 2024, after the incident. The victim was pronounced dead after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.
The entire altercation was captured on surveillance camera footage. Prosecutors claim Surveillance footage from the store shows Leggett going to the back after ordering his pizza, then returning to the counter and arguing with Owies. Although the video has no sound, it clearly captures the shooter appearing angry and gesturing toward Owies. Moments later, he pulls a handgun from his right pocket, leans over the counter, shoots Owies in the chest, and quickly flees as Owies collapses behind the counter.
A Confession:
Later, authorities claim the suspect told them he became angry after observing the worker preparing his food without gloves.
He reportedly told the worker it was “unsanitary” and demanded someone else prepare his pizza. He allegedly claimed that the victim, Owies, became loud and said he would do something to him, suspect, Leggett. “[Police] asked the Defendant what he did, and the Defendant replied, ‘I shot him.’
After a short 30-minute deliberation, a jury found Leggett guilty on one count of first-degree intentional murder with a dangerous weapon and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
He currently awaiting sentencing facing life imprisonment.
