Andre 3000 Reacts To Album Of The Year Grammy Nomination

Andre 3000 has solidified his unique return to music without rapping, gaining three Grammy nominations last week for his instrumentalist flute-based album ‘New Blue Sun.’ The Outkast frontman shared his thoughts on being nominated in the Album Of The Year category by the Grammys during his New York Times interview. This is his first solo nomination for Album Of The Year. Still, he’s no stranger to the award, as he and his bandmate Big Boi won the prestigious Grammy for their joint Outkast album “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” two decades ago. During his conversation with The New York Times, he clarified where he was and what he was doing when he heard of his triple Grammy nominations.

“I’m in Virginia today; we’re playing tonight,” he said. The multi-talented artist has been on tour with the band that recorded his album, performing experimental Jazz-influenced music for fans.

“I was just waking up and I heard that the nominations came in,” he continued. Andre 3000 also expresses his feelings surrounding his nominations: “We were trying to be nominated in some type of way for alternative jazz or ambient, possibly. But I was totally surprised by this. So yeah, it was super, super, super duper cool.”

They asked Andre 3000 about his feelings about no rap album winning in the Album Of The Year category since he and Big Boi won two decades ago. He further states, “It just depends on what’s important to the voters, and rap may not be important for them. I must say that even though “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” was the last rap album, it was half a rap album. So even in that, it’s saying, well, we enjoyed something more than rap.”
