Young Thug Released From Jail Takes Plea Deal in RICO Trial

Young Thug is scheduled to be released from jail after being sentenced on Thursday, with the possibility of avoiding further prison time if he completes 15 years of probation.

Judge Whitaker handed down the sentence, totaling 40 years. However, it’s more complex than it sounds: Thug received credit for five years already served and will spend the next 15 years on probation. There is also a suspended 20-year prison sentence that could be enforced if he fails to complete probation. If he adheres to the terms of probation, that part of the sentence will be dismissed.

During the hearing, Young Thug’s lawyer, Brian Steel, requested that he be allowed to continue associating with his co-defendants, including his brother Quantavious “Unfoonk” Grier and Sergio “Gunna” Kitchens, to maintain his music career.

The state initially pushed for a 25-year prison term, but the judge took a different approach. Young Thug opted to plead guilty in his YSL RICO case, marking the end of his involvement in what has become Georgia’s longest-running trial.

On Halloween 2024, Thug changed his 2022 plea, admitting guilt to criminal street gang activity. He also entered a no-contest plea to conspiracy to violate the RICO Act and leading a gang. Watch video clips of him accepting a plea during his trial and why he decided to take the deal.
