Jazz Musician Roy Ayers Dies At 85
Yesterday, it was reported that jazz legend vibraphonist Roy Ayers, known for his many hit records including, Everybody Loves The Sunshine passed away on March 4th at age 84. The musician’s family announced his death with the following statement via social media: “It is with great sadness that the family of legendary vibraphonist, composer, and producer Roy Ayers announce his passing, which occurred on March 4th, 2025 in New York City after a long illness. He lived a beautiful 84 years and will be sorely missed. His family ask that you respect their privacy at this time, a celebration of Roy’s life will be forthcoming.”
Ayers was the most sampled artist in music culture, specifically hip-hop, with producers such as J. Dilla, Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, and Madlib referencing his many compositions. According to Rolling Stone,” The user-based platform WhoSampled tabulated that Roy Ayers has been sampled 964 times, with 85 covers and 54 remixes.“
The most notable artist to sample Ayers’s work was Mary J. Blige on her 90’s hit song My Life, which dawned the same name as her album title. Roy Ayers was rightfully regarded as “The Godfather of Neo-Soul”, collaborating with musicians including the Roots, Guru, Fela Kuti, and Rick James. Ayers leaves behind his wife, Argerie, and their children, Mtume and Ayana Ayers, to mourn his loss. Rest in peace!
