WNBA star Brittney Griner has pled guilty to drug smuggling and drug possession charges during her court hearing in Russia Thursday. The basketball star was arrested at an Russian airport back in February 2022, after being caught with vaping cartridges and marijuana paraphernalia in her luggage.
Since then Griner has been locked up in a Russian jail without any contact to her wife or family. The WNBA star trial date was also pushed back twice with the judge deciding move it out as far as December 2022.
After her wife made complaints to the government and media, claiming she was not allowed to speak on the phone her wife during a scheduled call; along with Brittney Griner writing a heart felt letter to President Joe Biden for assistance in her release from jail. President Biden reportedly called Griner’s wife to reassure he would assist with bringing her back home from Russia to America.
According to reports Brittney Griner pled guilty in court admitting to the judge of her alleged wrong doing. Accepting her drug possession and smuggling charges entirely.
She told the judge, “I’d like to plead guilty, your honor, but there was no intent. I didn’t want to break the law.”
Griner spoke in English and it was translated to the court. She went on to say, “I’d like to give my testimony later. I need time to prepare.”
Griner is facing 10 years in prison if convicted. We’re currently unaware if Brittney choosing to plead guilty will reduce her sentence.
