Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken a major step toward gun control, with the announcement of a national bill to freeze all sales of hand guns in Canada.
This is after the United States has made headlines the past month due to several major mass shootings back to back across the country. The purpose of the bill is to reduced the distribution and sales of hand guns in Canada, to reduce the possibility of a mass shooting in the future; as homicide rates had drastically increased .
According to reports by USA Today “Canada had a reported 743 homicides in 2020 – the highest number since 1991 – prompting change. Canada previously initiated a 2020 law banning assault-style firearms but offered a gun buyback program to those who possessed the weapons.”
Gun violence has reached an all time high in the United States as citizens have been protesting to senators for stricter guns laws. In the past two weeks there were several mass shootings in the USA; one in Buffalo, NY where 10 black shoppers were killed by a self proclaimed 18 year old white supremacist, another mass shooting occurred in a church in California, and lastly the UValde, Texas elementary school mass shooting where 19 children were murdered.
