A Texas woman has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after allowing her 13 year old daughter to marry at 47 year old man under religious beliefs
According to 8news now Cherry Payton, 43, was convicted of continuous sexual abuse of a young child according to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office. She was sentenced 30 years for these heinous crimes against her daughter.
Prosecutors claims in 2017 the victim admitted to physician she sexual active with “her 47 year old husband”. The physician asked her mother Cherry Payton about the accusations, she admitted the victim was indeed married with her consent and it was a part of her Hebrew Israelites religious beliefs.
Further investigation revealed the victim had been married for a year before this shocking discovery by authorities. Evidence also confirmed Payton allegedly sexual abused her daughter as well. The husband, Steven Carty, 47 was also arrested for wedding a minor. Carty has been convicted with two sentences: 22 years and 20 years for aggravated sexual assault of a child and sexual assault of a child WFTV has reported.
In Texas the legal age to marry is 18 years although, it can be dropped to 16 years for special circumstances; such as two minors choosing to marry.
“Although the child victim in this case was failed by her mother time and time again, she was surrounded in the courtroom by a strong support system,” prosecutor Jessica Ramos said. “We are grateful to her adoptive mother, her court advocate, her CASA, and the caseworkers from Child Protective Services that supported the child throughout this investigation and trial.”
