Two city residents, a man and a woman, have been arrested in the killing of Alexander Mark Antonyyo Jr., the popular Bay Area rapper known as Lil Yase, authorities said.

Jovante Williams and Angel Butler, both 28, were arrested Tuesday on a murder warrant, police said. Alameda County prosecutors will decide whether to charge one or both of them on Thursday. The suspected motive is apparently personal, not something related to Antonyyo’s public persona; police say he was romantically involved with Butler, who was also dating Williams.

Antonyyo was gunned down in the early morning of Nov. 28, on the 5100 block of Iron Horse Parkway in Dublin. He left his San Francisco home hours earlier, allegedly to rendezvous with Butler, who lived with Williams within one block of the homicide scene. Police say they’re still investigating whether the planned meet-up was a setup.

Butler and Williams were identified as suspects based on unusual evidence, according to Dublin police Cpt. Nate Schmidt: Antonyyo allegedly made a “dying declaration” in a hospital that eventually led police to the two arrestees. Crime scene technicians also found DNA on a shell casing from the gun used to shoot Antonyyo that was linked not to either suspect, but to the child they shared, Schmidt said.

“We’ve been in close contact with the victim’s immediate family … we’re happy that we can come up with some kind of conclusion for them,” Schmidt said.
